Nakafurano to Niseko

Another scenic drive from Nakufurano to Niseko.

This was our most disappointing moment. We had wanted to try out Sobatei Rakuichi 431, Niseko, Niseko-cho, Abuta-gun, Hokkaido 048-1511 TEL: 0136-58-3170 (Use Karabina tel which is next to it 136-50-2850)
He's open from 11am to 3pm. He was supposed to close on Thursday and that was why we decided to be at Niseko on Wednesday but it was also closed on Wednesday. Well, we can always go the next time we visit Hokkaido. The restaurant is located on the first right off the road up towards the Annupuri ski ground. Parking is next to the restaurant called Karabina. Then you walk across a wooden bridge that is hidden behind the trees to find the restaurant. There is a sign on the door that says rude people are not allowed to come in, (this is a traditional when there is a master at work). This means that they choose you rather than you choosing them! Inside there is only a counter to dine which means places are limited and this due to the fact each bowl of soba is made fresh in front of your eyes. A good thing to order is "Juwari" which is 100% buck wheat soba nooble and a side dish of seasonal vegetable tempura. The evening sitting is by appointment only. This is for one group of people only that means you receive a very personal service, you choose the time and it's ¥5000 per person but cancelling at the last minute is not acceptable.

Well, we comfort ourselves with Hokkaido icecream which I have learned to love. Hokkaido milk is really delicious and so is the ice cream. I love the plain milk and the melon ice cream. YUMMY!

And we continue our drive to Hilton Niseko Village Niseko-cho, Higashiyama Onsen | Abuta-gun | Japan 0481592 T: 81-136441111  Parking Complimentary. The onsen was amazing with gorgeous views of Mt Yotei. We stayed for 1 night and it costs us ¥9,510

Higashikawa-cho to Nakafurano

Our next destination was Nakafurano. This time, we decided to stay on a farm and we chose Guesthouse Akane-yado (16 to 17 Jun)   Nakafurano Beberui, Nakafurano, Sorachi District, Hokkaido Prefecture 071-0711, Japan    Phone:  +81167444177 Email:     akaneyado2005@ybb.ne.jp
Free WiFi is available in all areas. Free private parking is possible on site. We stayed for 1 night and lodging was ¥11,000. We chose half board with breakfast and dinner and meals came to  ¥3,600.

We checked into the Akane-yado Farmstay after a long drive from Asahidake. The drive there was very scenic, passing through Biei and Furano.

Akane-yado is located within a vast area of farmlands of all kinds of crops, mainly grains, particularly rice. The usual way of navigating through GPS which is based on the reference of the destination's telephone was not very useful. It was later that we found out that the Akane-yoda has a 'Mapcode'. It will be best to obtain the map-code if you are driving there. However it was serendipity when we got lost there. While asking for directions, we drove through rolling plains of many shades of green-fields at various stages of maturity. Some were just ploughed, others had seedlings and yet some were bearing grains. It was a treat, getting lost in the area of minor roads.

It is a very cosy and comfortable stay at the property. We arrived and were quickly checked-in and given the tour of the facility and the house-rules. The living lounge was a very comfortable place for all the guests to mingle with jazz and new-age music in the background. The music was a very nice touch, we felt. The other guest-accessible areas are the dining room, the indoor patio and the outdoor deck just outside the house. The beverages are provided in the pantry area and some premium beverages and alcoholic drinks in the fridge and bar are chargeable. The rule is to register your consumption as you help yourself. Trust is the word. We find that very prevalent all across Hokkaido.

We arranged for our dinner and breakfast to be catered and we found both meals to be very well thought of and delicious.

We have stayed in many home-stays and we find this to be one of the best managed and clean. Bath and toilet facilities are shared commons. The rooms are basic but comfortable and very clean. When the rules are observed by all guests, the stay is made so comfortable and pleasant. Especially in the farm environment. Do observe the rules about venturing into farmlands and properties belonging to the farmers. They are making a livelihood and it is important not to disrupt their work. Also, it is not polite to step into their farms without proper preparation. We may introduce parasites and organisms that may not be good for the plants. The Japanese take their farming very seriously. Same with the agricultural economies like Australia and New Zealand.Show less

Room Tip: You'd have a choice of tatami room or regular bed.

These are views of the farm from our lodging.

Nakafurano-cho is located almost in the center of Hokkaido and is known for its farm produce in Hokkaido and lavender sightseeing birthplace Farm Tomita, Saika no Sato Sasaki Farm which is dotted with lavender fields. It's the most popular destination for tourists and every Singaporean who have been to Hokkaido would have stayed their longest here.
A short stop at the Furano Cheese Factory

Farm Tomita 15 Nakafurano Kisen Kita, Nakafurano, Sorachi District, Hokkaido Prefecture 071-0704, Japan +81 167-39-3939  is the landmark site in the region and no trip to Furano is complete without a visit thereA touristy spot. Go for the lavender ice-cream. The crowds is a bug-bear. We went in middle June and the flower are not in bloom yet. A better time will be in July. Then the Lavender will be in bloom.

Blue Pond (Aoiike)  Shirogane, Biei-cho, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido 071-0235, Japan GPS the phone number 0166-94-3355   The Blue Pond is named after is deep blue color which it owes to natural minerals dissolved in the water. The pond is part of an erosion control system that was built to prevent damage to Biei in case of an eruption by nearby Mount Tokachidake. It takes 5-10 minutes to walk through the forest to the pond.

Asahikawa to Higashikawa-cho

Our next destination was the town of Higashikawa which is located in central Hokkaido and is a part of Japan's largest national park – Daisetsuzan National Park. The tallest mountain in Hokkaido, Mount Asahi (2,291 m) is situated in Higashikawa. There is plenty of forest and spectacular landscapes which make this area a fabulous place to stay. Daisetsuzan National Park was designated a national park on December 4, 1934. This is a mountainous region with alpine flowers and sweet-scented herbs.

We decided to stay at Lodge Nutapukaushipe Yukomanbetsu, Higashikawa-cho, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido Tel 0166 97-2150.  We called the host,Mariko Haruna personally to book the lodging. We stayed for 2 nights and we chose half board and the bill came up to ¥ 32000.

It was a tough choice picking a suitable place to stay for our liking. We were spot-on when we found this Lodge. It is a large one-building-lodge which could accomodate 20 pax in all their rooms. I find the lodge charming in so many ways.

First it was the building itself. It appears to be hand-built and true enough, it was dreamt of, designed and with the help of builders, the owner (sorry i forgot his name) built it more than twelve years ago. It looks like a huge, double-storey log-cabin, but it has all the amenities that are equivalent to any hotels. Though the guest share the toilets and the long wash basins in a common wash area, they are ample and are with warmed-toilet-seats, electronic-bidets and electronic sensors for flushing and disinfecting after each use. The rooms are of the tatami and bedded types, up to the guests to indicate a preference subject to availability.

Second, it was the onsens. Both the indoor and the outdoor. The outdoor one is unisex though. The onsens are very traditional in taste and feel. Again, wood is featured prominently in the indoor onsen of the men's and women's. It could accomodate four or five pax at any one time. Adequate for the lodge's guest. The outdoor onsen faces the forest, is private and very well-blended into the environment with rocks and boulders and large leafy plants. The temperatures of the onsen is naturally dependent on the natural hot spring. However, if guests find the temperature of 42 degrees too hot, there is a cold spring-water tap that can be turned on to bring the temperature down.

Thirdly, the food cooked by the owner's wife is great! The seven or eight courses of each meal is very elegantly presented. Each meal for our two-day-stay is different and each has its unique feature. On our second dinner we we treated to grilled bamboo shoots. Asparagus-sized shoots that are grilled with their leaves intact and the owner taught us the special way to prepare the shoot for consumption. It was delicious. Fresh, crunch, sweetish and salted with table salt to taste. Many of the side dishes, like the bamboo shoots are made from plants that the owner picks from the forest during the day. There was a soy-sauce with garlic and other forest-herbs which we add to our chop-sticks-rolled sushi. It was a unique experience "rolling" our sushi without touching it with our fingers. Just the chopsticks will do the trick withe the nori prepared nicely with sauce.

Fourthly, the couple who manages...

Breakfast is also typical Japanese with some cooked fish, rice and miso soup, sometimes accompanied by some fruit or yogurt.

This is an absolutely beautiful house uniquely hand-crafted by the owner.  The lodge has 6 beautiful rooms of different shapes and sizes, mostly with tatami flooring. The place was impeccably clean.

There’s a basic but wonderful onsen (hot spring bath) inside the lodge—completely made of wood too. On top of that there's a rotemburo outside. The latter can be booked for private sessions, so you can soak together with your partner!  Love it!
